Moisture is one of the most important factors affecting transformer oil and solid insulation condition. Water can enter a transformer through leaks, worn seals, exposure during maintenance or normal aging. It can also be produced as cellulose insulation deteriorates. Because moisture may be present in both the oil and paper insulation, testing the oil provides valuable insight into the transformer’s overall condition.
Moisture analysis measures the amount of water dissolved in the transformer oil, typically reported in parts per million (ppm). However, the ppm value should not be evaluated on its own. Oil temperature, fluid type, transformer design and operating conditions can all influence how much moisture the oil can hold. Reviewing moisture saturation and historical trends can provide a clearer understanding of whether conditions are changing.
Elevated moisture levels can reduce the oil’s dielectric strength and increase the risk of electrical discharge. Moisture also accelerates the aging of cellulose insulation, potentially shortening the transformer’s service life. When combined with heat and oxygen, excessive moisture can contribute to sludge formation, corrosion and declining fluid quality.
A single elevated result may indicate moisture intrusion, a recent maintenance activity or changing operating conditions. A consistent upward trend may point to an ongoing sealing issue, moisture migration from the solid insulation or progressive insulation aging. Comparing moisture results with dielectric strength, acidity, interfacial tension, DGA and other test data helps create a more complete picture of transformer health.
MVA performs moisture analysis in our in-house transformer oil diagnostics laboratory. Our experts evaluate the results alongside other fluid-quality and diagnostic tests to help identify developing concerns and support informed maintenance decisions. Routine transformer oil testing and trend analysis can help asset owners address moisture-related issues before they contribute to insulation damage or an unexpected outage.
