What Is PCB Testing?

PCB testing determines whether polychlorinated biphenyls are present in transformer oil and measures their concentration. Because PCB contamination may result from historical fluid use, cross-contamination, retrofilling, or previous maintenance activities, the presence of PCBs cannot be confirmed through appearance or equipment records alone.

Laboratory analysis provides the reliable data needed to understand the fluid’s PCB status. Results are typically reported in parts per million (ppm), allowing equipment owners to properly classify the oil and determine appropriate next steps.

PCB Testing Using ASTM D4059

PCB Testing for Bushings and Other Oil-Filled Equipment

PCB concerns are not limited to a transformer’s main tank. Bushings, breakers, capacitors, and other oil-filled components may contain fluids with different PCB concentrations than the primary transformer fluid.

When individual components are being removed, replaced, repaired, or disposed of, testing their fluid separately may provide a more accurate understanding of the potential PCB content. This is particularly important when the component’s service history is incomplete or its fluid may not have mixed with the transformer’s main insulating oil.
