A transformer’s reliability depends on the condition of its insulating oil and solid insulation. Together, these materials provide electrical insulation, while the oil also transfers heat away from internal components. Moisture, contamination, excessive heat, and aging can weaken this system and increase the risk of equipment failure.
Monitoring oil and insulation integrity is an essential part of transformer maintenance. MVA combines transformer oil diagnostics with field testing and maintenance services to help utilities, municipalities, electric cooperatives, and industrial facilities identify developing concerns and plan corrective action.
What Transformer Oil Can Tell You
Routine oil testing provides valuable information about both the fluid and conditions inside the transformer. Different tests answer different questions, making a coordinated testing program more useful than relying on a single result.
- Dissolved gas analysis (DGA): Helps identify gas patterns associated with overheating, electrical discharge, and insulation decomposition.
- Moisture analysis: Measures water in the oil, which can affect dielectric performance and help inform an assessment of moisture in the insulation system.
- Dielectric breakdown testing: Evaluates the oil’s ability to withstand electrical stress under specified test conditions.
- Acidity and interfacial tension testing: Help assess oil deterioration and the accumulation of degradation products.
- Furan analysis: Provides indicators of cellulose insulation degradation that require interpretation alongside equipment history and other diagnostic findings.
Comparing results over time helps distinguish a stable condition from a developing problem. Transformer maintenance decisions should consider trends, operating temperatures, loading, fluid type, and previous repairs or oil treatment.
Looking Beyond the Oil
Oil condition and solid insulation condition are closely connected, but they are not interchangeable. Acceptable oil test results do not establish that the transformer’s paper insulation is healthy.
Cellulose insulation deteriorates as it ages, with heat and moisture contributing to that process. Furan testing can help assess this deterioration, but a single result cannot establish an exact remaining service life. Historical results and knowledge of the transformer’s insulation materials and oil treatment history provide essential context.
Where further investigation is warranted, MVA’s electrical diagnostic services, including power factor, capacitance, and insulation resistance testing, can provide additional information about insulation condition.
Address Conditions That Compromise Integrity
Protecting insulation involves more than collecting samples. Routine transformer inspections should evaluate oil levels, leaks, gasket condition, breathers, oil preservation systems, and cooling equipment. These checks help identify conditions that may allow moisture entry or contribute to elevated operating temperatures.
When testing reveals a concern, the appropriate response depends on its cause and severity. MVA can support follow-up sampling, additional electrical testing, transformer leak repair, regasketing, oil processing, reclamation, or vacuum dehydration as project conditions require.
Oil treatment can improve fluid condition, but it does not reverse aging that has already occurred in the paper insulation. Removing moisture from the oil alone also may not adequately address moisture retained in the solid insulation.
Turn Diagnostic Findings into a Maintenance Plan
Effective transformer maintenance connects test results with practical next steps. Establishing a baseline, maintaining consistent sampling practices, and reviewing changes over time help your team prioritize work and plan outages. Sampling frequency should reflect the transformer’s condition, criticality, operating demands, and manufacturer recommendations.
MVA is more than an oil testing laboratory. Our diagnostic and field service teams help you understand the findings, investigate concerns, and address maintenance needs with one team of transformer experts.
