Fault metals testing identifies and measures metallic particles dissolved or suspended in transformer insulating oil. The presence of certain metals may indicate wear, overheating, corrosion or deterioration involving internal transformer components. When evaluated with other diagnostic results, fault metals testing can provide additional insight into developing equipment conditions.
Transformers contain a variety of metallic components, including conductors, contacts, connections, cooling-system components and structural materials. Abnormal operating conditions can cause small amounts of these metals to enter the insulating oil.
Identifying the metals present may help narrow down which components or materials require further evaluation. Fault metals testing can be particularly valuable when other results indicate a potential internal issue but do not fully identify its source.
Different metals can be associated with different materials and components inside or connected to a transformer. Depending on the equipment’s design and construction, testing may identify metals such as:
Elevated or increasing concentrations may indicate abnormal wear, corrosion, overheating, arcing or deterioration of metallic components. However, the presence of a metal does not automatically confirm a specific fault. Results should be evaluated based on the transformer’s construction, service history, previous maintenance and other available diagnostic data.
Fault metals testing may be recommended when routine oil analysis identifies unusual results or when an internal equipment problem is suspected. It can also support investigations following abnormal operation or maintenance activities.

Establishing a baseline and trending results can help distinguish isolated contamination from a developing condition.
Dissolved gas analysis can identify gases associated with thermal and electrical faults, while fault metals testing may provide additional information about the materials involved. For example, abnormal gas generation combined with an increase in a particular metal may help guide further investigation toward a potential source.
Fault metals results may also be evaluated alongside particle count, moisture, dielectric strength, acidity and other oil tests. Reviewing multiple data points provides a more complete understanding of transformer condition than relying on one test alone.
