Transformer oil dielectric strength testing measures the oil’s ability to withstand electrical stress without breaking down. MVA performs this testing according to ASTM D1816, the standard test method for determining the dielectric breakdown voltage of petroleum-based insulating oils using VDE electrodes.
ASTM D1816 determines the voltage at which transformer oil experiences electrical breakdown and becomes conductive. The result, commonly called breakdown voltage or BDV, is reported in kilovolts (kV).

The test can reveal that the oil’s dielectric strength has been affected, but it does not identify the specific contaminant responsible for the result.
A transformer oil sample is placed in a test vessel between two VDE electrodes separated by a specified distance. The fluid is stirred while voltage is gradually applied until electrical breakdown occurs between the electrodes. The test is repeated according to the ASTM D1816 procedure, and the resulting breakdown-voltage measurements are evaluated.
Because this method is sensitive to moisture and particles, proper sample collection, transportation, and handling are essential. Exposure to humid air, dirty sampling equipment, unsuitable containers, or environmental contamination can affect the result.
A low ASTM D1816 breakdown voltage may indicate that further investigation or corrective action is needed. Depending on the complete laboratory findings, recommendations may include collecting a confirmation sample, performing additional analysis, filtering or dehydrating the oil, or more closely monitoring the transformer.
An acceptable breakdown-voltage result does not confirm that the oil is free from oxidation, dissolved gases, acids, or other forms of deterioration. ASTM D1816 results should be evaluated alongside moisture, acidity, interfacial tension, power factor, and other relevant oil-quality tests for a more complete understanding of fluid condition.
