Transformer oil acidity testing helps evaluate the condition and aging of insulating fluid. As transformer oil oxidizes, acidic compounds can form and accumulate, potentially contributing to sludge, reduced cooling efficiency, and deterioration of internal insulation.

What Does Acidity Testing Measure?

Acidity testing measures the amount of acidic material present in transformer oil. Results are typically reported as a neutralization number in milligrams of potassium hydroxide per gram of oil (mg KOH/g).

New transformer oil generally has very low acidity. An increasing result may indicate oxidation or deterioration, especially when accompanied by changes in interfacial tension, color, or other fluid-quality measurements.
